Schimdt (C.F) double (no serial#) DH

In 1897, Ed. Kruspe in Erfurt, Germany, developed the first double horn in F and B♭, featuring tandem rotors for the change valve—often mistaken for a “compensating” horn. Three years later, C.F. Schmidt in Berlin introduced a double horn with a piston change valve, with significant input from Anton Horner. Though Horner later favored the Kruspe “Modelle Horner,” the Schmidt horn became popular among professionals and students. Notably imported by Carl Fischer, Schmidt horns were widely used in the early 20th century, influencing designs by Conn, Alexander, and Carl Geyer. The history and serial numbers of these instruments offer insights into their production dates, such as a 1934 Schmidt horn confirmed by the original owner’s family.
